What Virtual Assistants Do: Hard to Sum Up, Isn’t It?

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

One of the things that you’re going to find when you are working as a virtual assistant is that there are going to be plenty of people who approach you with questions like “well, what do virtual assistants do anyway?” And, the first couple of times that you are asked the question, you’ll be full of enthusiasm, and then there might be a little bit of frustration with the question and then the reality is going to dawn on you: the reason why it’s tough to answer the question about what virtual assistants do is that every VA does things a little bit differently.

Ultimately, every virtual assistant does something a little bit different than the next. One may focus on working with authors or artists while another works with people in real estate or who have independent accounting or tax prep businesses. In other words, virtual assistants specialize – and this is a really good thing.

Beyond that, however, what you’re going to find is that VAs are there to support clients, that they run their own businesses and – perhaps most importantly, what virtual assistants do is simple: they love their work and they are thankful for the decisions that they’ve made.

As more and more people are making the decision to become a virtual assistant, the reality is that, because everyone has different virtual assistant skills that they bring to the profession, it’s not a matter of increasing competition – instead, it’s the chance to collaborate and to change the way that you’re able to get things done.

Of course, while virtual assistant skills vary from one VA to the next, when you have clients who are looking for different services than those that you offer, you’re going to want to think about what you can do to get those services in place. First, you can collaborate with another virtual assistant and partner together with the complementary services that you offer. Alternately, you can look into virtual assistant training that can help you to pick up new skills.

Either way, when it comes to virtual assistant skills, the variety is essential. Whether you’re looking into finding someone with complementary skills or you want to learn new skills for yourself, you’ll find that the variety is important – and that it’s something that helps us all.

Resources for Virtual Assistants: Ghost Writers

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Yesterday’s post was all about the fact that taking shortcuts and looking for the easy way out when you’re running a VA business is something that’s likely to come out to haunt you in the end and that may very well destroy your business. But there are going to be up and coming virtual assistants who don’t see themselves as writers and who aren’t aware of one of the best virtual assistants resources available: ghost writers.

Ghost writers are a great alternative for those virtual assistants who don’t fancy themselves to be writers for a number of reasons, but one of the reasons why they are such a valuable resource is that, to an extent, they too are virtual assistants. In other words, when you look into hiring a ghost writer to assist you with your VA business, you’ll find that you’re working with someone who understands your situation and who will be able to work with you to create unique content for your web site and to get the word out about what you have to offer.

In other words, when you are looking for resources for your virtual assistant business that will help you to simplify things, don’t be afraid to turn to others whose strengths compliment your own.

Running a VA Business: Setting Yourself Apart

Friday, November 7th, 2008

When you are running a VA business, one of the things that you are going to want to think about is simple: you’re going to want to make sure that you are thinking about what you can do to set your business apart from every other VA business out there. In other words, while you are running your VA business, you’re going to want to think about what you’re doing and about what everyone else is doing.

Now, when you think about what others are doing, you’re going to want to be sure that you are providing the right services, but not that you are modeling yourself after their business. You’re going to want to think about why someone looking for VA services would look to your competitor and what would attract them more to your business.

In other words, what you are going to find is that running a VA business is about knowing what you can do and doing it – and marketing it – as well as you possibly can. The more that you are able to look at your business and to focus on growth and the opportunities that exist, the more that you’re going to be able to set yourself apart.

Running a VA Business: Getting Unstuck

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

One of the things that you’re going to find while you’re running a VA business is that there are times when you just feel a little bit stuck. Now, in part there’s the reality that everyone gets caught up now and again and has a question that they’re having trouble answering, but even so, when you’re running a VA business, how will you get unstuck?

One of the best reasons to take a look at networking with other virtual assistants is that when you have people who you can count on and you get stuck you will find that there’s someone who you can ask. Whether you’re stuck and don’t know the next step to take on a project for your client or you just aren’t sure of the best way to launch a new marketing campaign, you’ll find that the best option will always be to know that when you ask a question, you’ll be able to get answers.

Getting unstuck while you’re running a VA business, therefore, is all about making sure that you are able to get to where you need to be. Whether you need answers to big questions or you just need a nudge that says someone believes in you, having a network will make sure that you have what it takes to run your VA business successfully.

Virtual Assistant Skills: Time Management

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Time management is one of the most important skills that any virtual assistant can have. While working as a VA and running your own business, you’re going to need to make sure that you’re able to get everything done that your clients are expecting. You’ll also need to be sure that you are making the time that you need to stay on top of business paperwork and tasks. And, of course, to top it all off, you’re going to want to make sure that you are not getting up before the sun and working late into the night.

While data entry, correspondence and some light bookkeeping are essential skills for virtual assistants, without time management, you’re going to find that there are a number of challenges that you’re going to face – both with providing services to your clients and with keeping your VA business running smoothly.

Rather than struggling to get everything done, why not focus on honing your time management skills? With time management training designed specifically for virtual assistants and the advice from those who have been there before, you can be sure that you’re getting the word out and making the most of your business.
