Chances are good that you are going to start to look for networking opportunities and to seek advice from other VAs; but you might not immediately start to think about using technology for virtual assistants.
In this case, when I mention technology for virtual assistants it isn’t about finding the best tool for backing up all of your files or that one computer or piece of software that’s going to make everything a lot easier; in this case, I’m talking about technology for virtual assistants that is going to enable you to interact with your prospective clients online.
If you are already using Facebook and you’ve specialized in working with a particular group of clients, why not search for Facebook groups that cater to those individuals. For example, if you’ve specialized as a real estate virtual assistant, consider joining those groups that are geared toward those in real estate looking for marketing support. The same can be done on LinkedIn and other social networking sites.
Similarly, you’ll find that blogging on specific topics to market your VA business is a great way to take advantage of technology as well as work you are already doing by submitting some of your best posts to blog carnivals. Make connections on Twitter with those who share your interests and build a network there as well.

One of the things that you are going to want to be thinking about when you start to look into running a VA business is that while “virtual assistant” is your title, there is really nothing virtual about the work that you’re doing. Sure, you will be working virtually for your clients – not heading into their offices in order to take care of answering calls, scheduling appointments or getting a mailing sent out – but there’s no doubt about it, you will be working.
In other words, you are going to find that running a VA business isn’t something that you can do unless you are committed to it. In order to run a VA business effectively, you need to be willing to take a look at training programs that will help you to learn new skills, to focus on strengthening your accounting skills or organization in order to make sure that you’re keeping tax paperwork in order and to think about marketing and other tasks that need to be taken care of.
Ultimately, running a VA business is all about making sure that you are taking charge – after all, it is your business, if you don’t commit to running it, who will?
When you’re running a VA business, it’s a good idea to take a look at the big picture – especially when you are just starting out. Whether or not you were supportive of the Obama candidacy, one of the things that you’ll find, now that he has taken the Oath of Office and challenged us all to become the change that we wish to see; while it might not be exactly what he had in mind, for some of you, becoming a virtual assistant just might be the change that you can believe in for yourself.
When you start to look into becoming a virtual assistant, what you are going to find is that:
- You are in a great position to build a business for yourself – one that you can run on your terms.
- You are able to commit time to your family and to schedule your days around those things that are important to you (say, volunteer service one night a week, for example).
- You will have the opportunity to run a business based on the values that you have and the goals that you have set for yourself and to know that it’s possible to achieve all of the goals that you have set for yourself.
- You are able to get the support that you need along the way so that you know that you are headed in a direction that you can feel fantastic about.
The more that you look into becoming a virtual assistant – especially when you are thinking about those changes that you can make that will help you to build a life that you feel fantastic about living – the more likely that you are to find yourself moving forward. The more that you ensure that you are getting the support that you need along the way and the more that you know you are working toward fulfilling lifetime goals that you’ve set for yourself, the more that you’ll find the rewards of becoming a virtual assistant.
