Running a VA Business: Maintaining Balance
One of the most important things that you can do when you are running a VA business is to keep track of your time. Simply put, it’s easy to get caught up in the realization that the vacuum cleaner needs to be run when you’re working at home; it’s easy, when you set your own schedule, to make the time for lunch with friends and to work through dinner with your family. Part of running a VA business effectively is making sure that you are maintaining a balance.
When you’re running a VA business, you’re going to need to spend some time marketing and growing your business. You’re going to need to be sure that you’re making an effort to keep the books and to stay on top of those activities that are just a part of running any business. You’re going to need to be sure that, even though you are running a VA business, you’re getting things done for your clients, you will be able to spend time with your family and friends.
One of the most important things that anyone running a VA business can do is to learn how to establish and maintain a balance in what they are doing. Simply by managing your time well and making sure that everything gets enough attention, you’ll find that you’re more successful and more relaxed.

I couldn’t agree more. As a virtual assistant and mother of a four-year old, finding the balance can be challenging. My husband also works from home though so we are able to spend time as a family each and every day. We make sure to take time out each day to read with our daughter, teach her the piano, and make sure she gets the attention she needs. She has her own desk in our office where she can play educational computer games and her own drawer with paper and colors.
I try to get the laundry started and kitchen cleaned before I start my work day – just like I would if I worked outside the home. At lunch time I do other household chores – just like I used to do when I worked away from home but came home for lunch. I do have to work on doing less work on the weekends. But we still find time to play – go for a drive, have friends over, watch movies.
