Becoming a Virtual Assistant: Why It Can Be a Great Idea

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

When you’re looking for a chance to get ahead, to work for yourself and to be able to use the skills that you’ve developed while working in a professional capacity, you just might find that your best bet is to become a virtual assistant. While there are a number of great reasons why becoming a virtual assistant is a great idea, you’ll find that some people are able to sum it up simply:

(source)“So many companies are downsizing now because of the economy but they still need the help,” Tincher said.

Virtual assistants do the job of administrative assistants but can cost a company much less. Virtual assistants provide their own equipment and supplies in their own office. Companies don’t have to provide costly benefits packages like sick days or health care, Tincher said.

In other words, when you make the choice to become a virtual assistant, you’ll find that the work that you do is out there and that there are companies who are looking for a way to get those services without having an employee on site. Hiring someone who comes into the office is expensive and, while most companies pay their virtual assistants well (something that depends, in part, on the virtual assistant him or herself), working with a VA is far more cost effective for them.

When you become a virtual assistant, you’ll find that you have more control over what you do; you’ll find that you’re in a position to accept some jobs and to pass on others. You’ll also find that, by becoming a virtual assistant, you’re in a position to determine how much of an income you’ll have based on your ability to market and run your business.

Becoming a virtual assistant is a great way to break into owning your business and the best part is that, when you’re ready to become a VA, there’s business training out there that can ensure that when you get started you’ll be headed in the right direction.

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

When you’re looking into differentiating yourself from other virtual assistants, it’s important to look at what virtual assistants do in general. After all, there are going to be a number of virtual assistant services that are fairly standard.

Most virtual assistants are going to offer basic administrative services - picking up calls, backing up files, responding to basic email inquiries, distributing information by making sure that their clients mailings make it to the post office on time and make it to other distribution points as needed.

In addition, though, what many virtual assistants do is to offer some additional services - whether by specializing in working with real estate professionals or financial services providers or by focusing their experience and putting it to work for their clients. For example, some virtual assistants focus on providing marketing services, writing services or website maintenance.

When you’re looking at which services to offer in your virtual assistant business, you’re going to want to make sure that you are looking at all of your options. In other words, you’re going to want to focus on providing those services that your clients are going to need as well as those services that you simply enjoy providing.

  2. Look at the cost of the office supplies and tools that you’re going to need in order to run your virtual assistant business effectively and consider those costs.
  3. Look at the costs associated with marketing your business
  4. Look at the costs of the space where you are working from - even if they are a percentage of your monthly rent or mortgage payment.
  5. Look at the costs associated with utilities that you’ll be using for your business.
  6. Take into consideration the costs associated with paying taxes for your business.
  7. Look at the costs of ongoing education that you’ll need to ensure the success of your business.

  1. Has a great domain name
  2. Contains all of the information your prospective clients are looking for
  3. Is optimized for the search engines
  4. Is easy to navigate
  5. Includes opportunities for you to get information about your site visitors.

Likewise, when you’re doing VA marketing, it’s important to know about crafting electronic newsletters and other tools for getting the word out about whom you are and what you do. After all, how are you going to attract clients if there is nobody who knows you are a virtual assistant?

Virtual Assistant Marketing: Making Sure You Reach the Right People

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

When you are marketing yourself as a virtual assistant, one of the best ways to get the word out is to work on creating a great mailing list. However, pay attention to that phrase: the important concept for virtual assistant marketing is creating a great mailing list. When you’re marketing yourself as a virtual assistant, it’s important to know that the people who receive your information will be interested in it.

Take this for example - from a blog post by someone who is a VA who isn’t necessarily happy about receiving unsolicited email:

(source)I’m getting some disturbing emails from Virtual Assistants, and I sincerely hope this isn’t the beginning of a trend. My personal email address has magically ended up on a few Virtual Assistants’ email lists. And when I get these emails, there is no option for me to unsubscribe myself.

This bothers me a lot - because not only is it annoying - it undermines the credibility many VA’s have worked so hard to build for themselves and for their industry. I suspect these particular VA’s purchased mailing lists with my email on it, instead of building their own.

It touches on a lot of great points. First, when you’re marketing yourself as a virtual assistant, it’s essential to reach out to the right people - and to make sure that they want to hear from you. When you set up an e-marketing list, always make sure that those who receive your message have either opted in or are able to opt out.

That’s a good practice too even after you’ve been developing your email VA marketing list: always make it easy for folks to sign up for your list and to stop receiving messages if they want to - it’s just a good business practice.
