Not Sure You’re Ready to Become a Virtual Assistant?

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

There are plenty of people out there (and maybe you are one of them) who are starting the great debate. Loosely translated, they are asking themselves the following question: “Should I become a virtual assistant?”

In other words, at any given moment, there are a number of people out there who feel like they have the skills to become a virtual assistant, people who feel ready to work for themselves, people who just aren’t sure that they are prepared.

Here’s the thing: if you have been an administrative assistant, you already have the skills to become a virtual assistant. If, however, you are nervous about not having the ability to run your own business, take a deep breath: if you want to become a virtual assistant, there is business training available that will help you to tie up the loose ends.

Becoming a virtual assistant means – more than anything else – you need to make a commitment to going into business for yourself and, rather than continuing to work for others, you’re willing to take the necessary steps to do more.

Running a VA Business: What Can You Expect?

Monday, March 10th, 2008

If you’ve been thinking about running a VA business and it’s still something that’s new to you, you might be wondering what you can expect.

So just what can you expect when you run a virtual assistant business? On one hand, there are going to be some differences from one VA to the next, but on the other, there are some general things that will be the same across the board:

  1. Running a VA business means that you’re going to need to have exceptional communication skills. You may never actually meet your clients, but it’s important to be able to discuss projects, deadlines, ideas and even payment.
  2. Running a VA business is going to require that you’re able to tackle marketing tasks (or at least find a great team who can do marketing for you). When you’re working for yourself, you need to be sure that as many people as possible will know not only that you are available but also what services you provide. And, as an added plus, the better that you are with marketing yourself, the more that you’ll have to offer clients.
  3. Running a VA business means setting guidelines for yourself. In many cases, people choose to run a VA business because they want to be able to spend more time with their families; if you can’t set limits that you’ll work between set hours and accomplish certain things each day, you’re going to find that there are a number of challenges that you’ll have to face.

The best way that you can figure out what to expect from running a VA business is going to be talking with others who have been there; as a result, you’ll be able to hear the ins and outs from the inside.

Virtual Assistant Marketing: Why Are Some VAs so Successful?

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

Different virtual assistants often discover that they have extremely different levels of success. On some levels, this is because they specialize in different areas and, in other cases, you’ll find that it comes down to one simple element: the way that they approach virtual assistant marketing.

Virtual assistant marketing is all about knowing which services you offer and how those services can benefit your family. Virtual assistant marketing means knowing how each of the services that you can offer will benefit each client that you approach – on one hand, you’ll find that the same services that you offer your real estate clients like photo retouching can also benefit those who sell insurance or other services.

The key to successful virtual assistant marketing is knowing how to promote each service to each group of clients. The key to successful VA marketing is knowing that you’re able to approach the right people at the right time with the right information.

Understanding that – and putting it to work when you market your services – is going to help to ensure your success. If you’ve got questions about VA marketing and other techniques that will help you to get the success that you’re looking for, one of the best things that you can do is to join a network of successful virtual assistants and to be sure that you ask questions and get the answers that you need.

Running a VA Business: Knowing What You Can Do to Benefit Your Clients

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

When you’re running a VA business, one of the most important things that you’ll need to keep in mind is going to be what you can do to benefit your clients. When you know what you can do for your clients, you’ll find that you’re the one at an advantage.

By knowing that working with a virtual assistant can help companies to improve their customer service, for example, you’ll find that it’s a lot easier to look at ways of marketing your services. When you know that working with virtual assistants can help your clients to reduce their costs (and, more importantly, when you know how working with a VA can help them to do so), you’ll find that you have another benefit to offer.

In other words, when you’re running a VA business, part of knowing what your skills are, part of specializing and even part of marketing comes down to knowing exactly what you can do to help you clients.

When you know what your services can offer, it’s easier to show prospective vlents what you can do for them. When you’re thinking about offering a new service – introducing something else to your repetoire – if you know how it will benefit your clients, it will be easier to get them on board.

That sort of awareness is essential when you’re running a VA business: it makes it far easier to reach your goals, to work with clients and to market your services. Knowing what you can offer makes a huge difference.

Becoming a Virtual Assistant: Choosing Your Niche

Friday, March 7th, 2008

When you become a virtual assitant one of the most important things that you can do is to set yourself apart by identifying your niche.

Niche marketing on the internet is something that everyone who starts an online or virtual business hears about at some point. It’s about specializing, it’s about showing that, within a certain field, you have something to give – a service that you can provide (or a product that you can sell) that no one else does in quite the same way.

The best thing that you can do when you become a virtual assistant is to find a niche where your interests are – if you love marketing, marketing is a great starting point; if you enjoy writing or blogging, those are great places to start as well – because that’s going to help you to stay committed to your business.

Once you’ve started looking at your niche, you’ll want to be able to identify the need for it and to learn more about what you need to target that niche.

This is such an important part of becoming a virtual assistant that it’s a core element of VA business training that, if you’re thinking about becoming a VA it’s definitely something to look into.

What Virtual Assistants Do, or Why Do Business Professionals Work with Virtual Assistants

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

There are a number of things that fall into the category of what virtual assistants do – and it’s hard to touch on them all (in part because we all offer different services). However, regardless of what you do as a virtual assistant, it’s important to recognize that there are specific things that business professional are looking for when they make the choice to work with virtual assistants.

Why do business professionals work with virtual assistants? Here are a few of the reasons:

  1. Business pros work with virtual assistants because even though they have an office, they feel like they don’t have enough space to brink another person into their physical space;
  2. Business professionals look for virtual assistants because they know that there are services that they need that do not need to be provided from the same location;
  3. Business professionals enjoy working with other professionals – particularly those who own their own businesses – because they know that the professionals are invested.

That investment in what you do is the thing that virtual assistants have that more traditional assistants do not have: when you work as a virtual assistant and own your own business, you are responsible for your own success. Other professionals see this and become far more willing to consider your contributions – and that’s what helps virtual assistants to become increasingly sought after especially as more and more professionals know what we do.

When you’re working as a virtual assistant, one of the most important things that you will need to keep in mind is that there are a wide variety of tools that will help you to market your services so that you can get the word out about what you’re doing and what you have to offer.

Some of these marketing tools are going to be the "old standbys" – you’ll want to be sure that you’re able to design great business cards, to create flyers and brochures that talk about the services that you offer. Other marketing tools that are in this sort of category are those that let you get the word out locally: newspaper ads or a listing in the phone book.

Then there are going to be online VA marketing tools – things like websites, blogs, writing articles, submitting press releases and even videos and pay per click campaigns that will help others to find out more about what you do. When you’re working online for at least some of your clients, it makes sense that you’ll want to do some online marketing as well.

Finally, there are those virtual assistant marketing tips that you can only get from others who have been there: it’s possible to learn from the ways that others were inspired and figured out a new way of doing something. The only way to learn about these tools so that you can start using them to market your own business is to network with other virtual assistants.

5 Reasons to Become a Virtual Assistant

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Thinking that you might become a virtual assistant but you’re just not entirely sure whether or not it’s the right idea for you? Here are five great reasons why starting a virtual assistant business is a great way to start working for yourself as a VA.

  1. When you become a virtual assistant, you have a lot of the skills that you’re going to need up front; the only training that’s required is the training that will help you run a business effectively.
  2. When you become a VA, you’re able to specialize in providing the services that you enjoy. If you love editing photos in addition to offering administrative help, you can make that a part of your business.
  3. When you become a virtual assistant, it’s easy to get the information and help that you need from people who have been there and learned a lot about the industry – you can learn from mistakes that others have made.
  4. When you become a VA, you’ll be able to – at least to some extent – set your own hours and your own schedule rather than showing up in the morning and working for the hours that someone tells you that you should.
  5. When you become a virtual assistant, you’re able to work for yourself – and that puts you in control of your income, your schedule and, ultimately, your life.

Rather than simply putting your skills to work for others, when you become a virtual assistant you’re able to put them to work for yourself; isn’t that your ultimate goal?

Running a VA Business: Finding the Right Clients

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

When you’re running a VA business, one of the things that you’ll quickly discover is that there are some client relationships that are going to be great and others that, well, aren’t a great fit. One of the things that you’ll wnat to focus on, therefore is finding the right clients.

Finding the right clients is, in part, about looking for those business folks out there who are looking for the services that you’re providing. In part, it’s about knowing your personality and knowing what types of people you get along with well – especially in a business environment.

In part, though, it’s all about setting up a plan that will let you get to know more about the people that you might be working with before you take them on as clients – and when you network with other virtual assistants, you’ll find that they have developed great plans for doing just that. It’s also about trusting your gut.

Each time that you’re put into a situation where you choose the wrong clients, make a list of the questions that you wish that you had asked. In the future, before you start working with someone, ask those questions.

When you’re running a VA business, you won’t always be able to pick and choose your clients; still, it’s a good idea to take the time – up front – to get a feel for the relationships and what they will be like. It’s sure to help you out over time.
